Thirty-nine spiral-bound volumes containing photocopies of the full run (minus 1989) of the daily column written by political and social satirist Art Hoppe for the San Francisco Chronicle. Variously headlined "Art Hoppe," "Our Man Hoppe," and "The Innocent Bystander," the column began in 1960 and, at its peak, was syndicated in over 100 newspapers nationwide. The column covers local and national politics and features an ongoing cast of humorous, invented characters, including Private Oliver Drab, the Heavenly Landlord, Joe Sikspak, and Homer T. Pettibone.

Art Hoppe was a reporter and columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle for approximately 50 years. He began there as a copy boy in 1949 and was promoted to reporter seven months later. Known for his satire and humor, he was one of a cadre of reporters at the Chronicle that came to represent a journalistic era. He died in Feb. 2000.
